Åcon 2 is a small, fannish, literary relaxacon in Mariehamn, Åland 1–4 May 2008. All of the programming is in English, and we’re proud to have Ian McDonald as our guest of honour.
A hello from the Chair
Åcon 2 is the beginning of something beautiful. Well, really it’s just science fiction convention, but there are whole layers of meta stuff that go with it. At least in my head.
As the numeral might hint, this is the second Åcon. From what I’ve heard, the first was an absolute blast, so we’re doing it all over again. Oh yes, I’m Eemeli Aro, chair in absentia of Åcon 1 and chair of Åcon 2.
Åcon 2, in part, is meant to be a place and a time for people to just meet and talk. Partly this is a function of us organisers not having been able to think up hours upon hours of Really Interesting Stuff, but mostly it’s due to us wanting to put together an event that we’d like to come to ourselves: some programming, much socialising, an interesting GoH, a fannish literary atmosphere, and a location and a schedule that might actually permit seeing the city where the con is. Which all very incidentally adds up to an event where there’s a whisker of a chance that that con-com won’t be constantly run ragged.
Åcon 2 is a Nordic convention with, admittedly, a Finnish–Swedish tilt (a bit under 2/3 of the 60 attending members of Åcon 1 were Finns and most of the rest were Swedes). We blame geography for this and may take it up with the appropriate authorities. This time, we’re doing our best to spread the good word even further. If you want to pigeonhole us into a category, then I do believe we’ll go in the same slot with Beneluxcon, Eurocon and another small event. The only real difference is that you get to buy tax-free goods when coming to Åcon.
Oh yes, the meta stuff. Forgot to mention that. If you come to Åcon, you’ll help make the world a better place. I have the Logic and Reasoning to support this, if anyone’s interested.
